Mother’s Day celebrations were held with gusto by the newly formed Tarnaka Women’s Welfare Association (TWWA), at the Tarnaka Community Centre on Sunday 12 May 2019.
The fledgling body is the Women’s Wing of the Standing Committee of Tarnaka Residents’ Welfare Association (SCOTRWA), and includes women representatives from the four colonies of Tarnaka–Gokul Nagar, Keemti Colony, Nagarjuna Nagar and Tarnaka.
Events were spread over four days and started with Lalitha Sahasranamam chanting at the Mahila Bhavan at Nagarjuna Nagar. Unmindful of the sweltering heat, the enthusiastic members participated in games like lemon spoon race, musical chairs, sari folding, elocution, quiz and memory games spread over four days leading up to the International Mother’s Day on Sunday 12 May.
Speaking on the occasion, former Vice Chancellor of the Osmania University and presently the President of SCOTRWA, Prof Tirupati Rao, said the closeness found in Indian families is unique to our culture and the mother is central to this family unit. Activities must be consciously conducted to strengthen this family closeness and to ensure it is not lost in the fast pace of life.
Tarnaka Corporator Ms A. Sarswati stressed on the need to recognise a mother’s importance every day - 365 days, 24/7 rather than just on Mother’s Day. God cannot be everywhere that is why he made mothers to look after everyone with great care, she emphasised.
Prof A Laxmi of Dept of Political Science Osmania University said a mother undergoes a rebirth when she gives birth to us. She advised the TWWA to work towards addressing the problems of the women in Tarnaka and create awareness programmes.
Tarnaka Women’s Welfare Association aims to work for the common cause of the residents and betterment of the area, said B Sujathamma. Smt Dhanalaxmi, one of the senior members of TWWA who has served as the President of Keemti Colony Resident Women’s Welfare Association in the past, was instrumental in mobilising the women to take active participation in the event.
Veena recital by young girls and a dance show entertained the audience. Corporator Saraswati gave away prizes to the winners.
